Gunsmith handgun return

I have a customer who sent a handgun into a gunsmith for repair. He sent it out via a dealer and the pistol was returned to us (different dealer).

This customer says its his, and is in 30 day DROS jail due to another purchase.

1. How do I/He prove it was his so i can return it to him? It came addressed to him, but I am concerned that I would need proof of ownership to give it back to him.

He can get the original DROS, but that hardly proves ownership, since it could of been sold since then.

I can transfer it back to his original shop he sent it out from if that would solve it as well.

I would assume that to fall under the 27105 exemption that the transfer to the gunsmth, and the return from the gunsmith would need to be by the same gunsmith. If you could transfer it to the original FFL to process the exempt transfer back to the owner, that would probably be the safest thing to do.

Thank you, I would have to agree, but wanted to check. I think it would easiest to return to original shop that sent it out.
