Need help transfering a handgun from TX to San Diego, CA

Hello everyone, i'm new here to this site and very new to firearms in general. I'm looking to get my first handgun. I have a good friend in Texas who wants to gift a CZ75B to me, but I am a San Diego, California resident.

From my understanding, he needs to give the gun to an FFL in Texas and have them send it to an FFL in San Diego, CA to do the transfer. He lives about an hour North of Dallas in Aubrey, TX. Now, the problem we are having is that the 3-4 FFL guys he's spoken to have told him that they won't ship to California. So assuming we are doing this right, does anyone know anyone near there in Texas that will send it to California? Am I going about this the wrong way?

Also, does anyone know a good place in San Diego to have it sent to? Turners said they don't do the transfer, TDS gun store wants around $75 for the transfer and De Chiel firearms wants $50. All of that seems high to me.

Thanks for any help, I do appreciate it!

Go here first to check to be sure the firearm can even be transferred to you.

Check around to a couple stores as to what their prices for interstate transfers are. $50 plus dros and tax might be typical in your area.

FFLs out of state do not understand all of CA laws and assume on the side of "we don't ship to CA" Maybe a friendly call or email might go a long way.

Hope this gets you started in the right direction.

I had already checked the DOJ website, it is legal to register here. But for some reason, these people in Texas don't want to do the transfer. I was just hoping someone here had dealt with someone in Texas and could point me in the right direction.

go to gunbroker.com and search in the FFL finder who in the area does transfers. I would call and speak directly rather than email as you probably will get more from a call that a quick reply from someones email. I would ask nicely and explain that sending into CA is no different other than the CFLC paperwork and that takes about 2 minutes to set up and print out. Maybe even offer to pay an additional $10 for their 'extra' time to deal with the CFLC.

Also please, thank you, and flattery go a long way... Stuff like "we are trying to use our 2A rights out here in CA and are trying to fight the good fight and appreciate your helping out" IDK Ive done it before and even bought stuff from GB when their auction specifically says NO CA SALES! Just a quick email and an explanation usually gets it done for me... GL

I appreciate that info Aces, and I do try to make it a point to always be courteous when I can. At this point, I'm not interested in fighting a good fight. Just trying to get a handgun lol! I will start making some phone calls tomorrow and hope for better luck. Thanks!

NP, its been my experience that most guys out of state dislike CA and its laws, typically their answer to CA is to not deal with it. I've had plenty of guns come in from the lone star state and I'm sure you will find someone who will help you. (although I can't find out who they were without digging through a bunch of file boxes searching for old FFLs we did biz with before)

There is no requirement that the firearm be shipped from a FFL. The only advantage to shipping a handgun from a FFL is that the FFL can use USPS, which is much cheaper than UPS or FedEx overnight (which is what they require, not the law, but just their rules). This assumes that the FFL does not charge too much to ship it.

The exact model of the firearm has to be on the certified list.

For a place to have it shipped to, I have good things about Gussler's. I don't know their contact info, just their name.

Also be sure to check the finish. I had a customer that had told me they purchased a CZ75B. I had assumed black...it was nickel when it arrived so I had to break the news to them that it wasn't on the roster.

Remember, finish and color matter (not just model number).
