    Paperwork Questions

Hello, I have some questions about becoming a CA FFL.

Can someone help me on what specific paperwork a customer needs to bring to a firearm purchase or transfer? (Handguns and longguns are different?)

Also, what paperwork do I need to retain in my records? (4473, DROS, CA DL Photocopy, HSC copy??)

Just trying to get a handle on what is required as far as paperwork goes and also what is no necessarily required, but what is simple a good idea for CYA situations,

    Thank you.

The 4473 says what 'paperwork' is required on a federal level.

The DROS system will need to be installed before you start selling firearms. You will need an FFL, CA COE, Local firearms license, Sellers permit from the BOE,

If you intend to sell handguns you will need to be an HSC instructor.

ATF records are 20 years, HSC Tests are 3 years, I would also do a simple customer agreement to CYA. Mine is pretty simple 1 page and I have customer sign, date, dros #, make, model, serial #, and caliber on it.

Handgun, needs CA ID w proof of residency, and copy of HSC or exemption for DOJ. ATF Does not require proof of residency copies just document on 4473 how you proved their address if ID is not current. 4473 says what is acceptable to use for alternate ID.

Longgun- CA ID no proof unless ID doesnt show current address.

Alright, thank you. Can you tell me which pieces of paperwork need to be kept in my records as copies or originals? I know about the DROS and 4473, but do I need copies of the DL, proof of residency, or HSC? How long?

      Thanks for the help.

You need a copy of the HSC. If the ID/DL does not read in with the card reader, you need to have a copy of that. I am not sure if a copy of the proof a residency for CA is needed, but it is a good idea. You don't need a copy for the Feds.

I would have to look up how long you need to retain the copies. I think the HSC is something like 3-5 years, but I just keep them all with everything. It is 20 years for the 4473.
