Husband Died wife doesn't want guns

My cousin's husband died. She asked me to help her "Get rid of" his handguns. I don't want either gun. One is off roster so the shop I talked to won't do a consignment sale. If she decides to do a private party sale, does she need to do a transfer into her name before trying to sell them? Can they be listed for sale then do all the transfers at one time at a dealer? How is this normally handled?

    Thanks for your help.

Unless something has changed, off roster guns can still be sold on consignment. If your dealer wont sell them, try a different one.
If she sells them PPT, the issue of seller ownership would only come up is the buyer has a DROS problem, and it needs to be returned to the seller, or if for some reason the guns came back stolen.

Wow, a calguns member who turns down free guns!

I would have taken them in a heartbeat, regardless of make, model or condition if she is simply looking to "get rid of" the guns. If the process becomes too onerous she will simply dump them off at the PD for disposal. And what a tragedy that ususally is, when they could be adding to a collection, providing sport, or even giving someone the chance to defend their lives. Even if I did not want or need the guns myself, I would eventually find someone who wanted or needed them.

I didn't say they were free, or even free to me her favorite cousin. They will be sold. I don't have any use for or desire to own those particular guns. I want to help her move them legally, removing her from any liability, for a fair price.

I will check with a different dealer.

So if she does sell them PPT, it might be worth the $40 to transfer them to her name first? I believe there is a form on the DOJ website for that?

We are located in the Yuba City/Marysville area.

I'm trying to avoid turning this thread into a "For Sale" thread, but once I figure all this out for her, and if she does sell them PPT, I will put a thread in the appropriate place.

              Thanks for your help guys.

Ah, I see. From your intitial post, my impression was that she simply wanted them gone, and if selling them was quick and easy, she would do that... otherwise...

I bought a gift for a person, once upon a time... after a couple of years that person decided they no longer wanted to be a gun owner... once that happened, I had to move fast because I was afraid that if it took too long or was too inconvenient, they would turn the gun in for destruction or simply dump it in a trash can somewhere. Sometimes people do that because they don't realize what the gun is worth, or because they simply can't bear to have it around another second. In this case, I called and made all the arrangements for her, even paid the shipping and forwarded her driving directions to the FFL, who I had called ahead of time to let them know to expect her, and what the situation was, so there wouldn't be any confusion.

                Good luck with the sale.
