Question: Can a FFL open carry in their store?

From what I'm reading it sounds like they can't but one of the guys at the shop I bought my gun from open carries all the time.

I don't know if he's LEO or anything like that - he always seems to be in the shop though.

Unless things have changed recently, yes he can, if it is his business or he has permission of the owner. In fact he can carry concealed if he so desires, you'd be surprised how many jewelry store owner do.

OK, thanks. It's tough weeding through all of the info out there to get a definitive answer!

As long as they remain inside the store:

Owner of the store can open carry and/or conceal carry a loaded firearm.

Employees of the store can open carry loaded firearms.

Yes. You can do what you want on your own property. Sometimes I even loaded open carry outside the store on our property. Taft PD and Kern County Sheriffs don't care. This is Kern County!

Just to clarify, it's not his property. It's a retail location in a strip mall that he rents.

Cool guy and been a big help to me through the process of owning my first gun.

I require all of my staff to carry when working.

If it is a rented space, check the agreement and see if they prohibit firearms. If not, carry away. However, be aware if you make a scene, you might end up getting evicted. Concealed carry would probably be more appropriate. Which I don't think there is an officer out there that is going to arrest you for concealed carry in your gun store.

So far all gun stores I have visited have their employees open carry. Turners, Ammo bros, addax tactical and I believe even gun world(can't remember)

As a retail store owner, FFL, and real estate broker, I can tell you that his lease is still considered an estate for years and he has all the rights to that property for the term of his lease. No law in CA says you do not have the right to open carry in your own property. And yes even if he leases the store it would still be considered his property as the owner of the land has chosen to give away his bundle of rights for a specific time period. (the duration of the lease) He can allow employees to carry open if he wants to.

A local gun store owner told me that he used to not carry. A LEO came in one day and told him he better start carrying, if the bad guys find out you don't carry you'd wish you had.
