    Inherited gun question

    Hello,

I inherited a Remington model 720 from my Grandfather in the mid nineties. It has sat in a old wooden case (bolt removed and a gun lock attached)under my bed since.

In the last month I purchased a 10/22 and obtained a hunting license. Both are firsts for me.

Now I intend on using the inherited model 720 (30.06) for pig and what not.

What is the process for getting this gun legally in my name?

I am new to this hobby, so please forgive me for anything stupid I have posted.

    Thank you in advance

    No action required.

Very few long guns, aside from RAW (Registered Assault Weapons), are known to the State.

That changes Jan 1, 2014, for transfers occurring on or after that date.

Hi, I have a similar situation and I just wanted to be sure about a few things. My Dad left me 5 rifles in his will and I would like to bring some or all to California. He died in Maine and that's where the rifles are currently. If I am reading my research correctly, Penal Code 27545 only requires inherited handguns to be transferred via an FFL? Is this correct? Thank you.

Both California and federal law allow you to inherit (via a will) handguns and long guns without going through an FFL.

Currently, California law requires you to self-register any handguns you receive this way. Starting next year you will also have to self-register any long guns you inherit.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

It is also legal to ship firearms to yourself.

Q: May a nonlicensee ship firearms interstate for his or her use in hunting or other lawful activity?

Yes. A person may ship a firearm to himself or herself in care of another person in the State where he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. The package should be addressed to the owner. Persons other than the owner should not open the package and take possession of the firearm.

                Special Procedures for Shipping Firearms
Use These UPS Services for Your Firearm Shipment
UPS accepts packages containing firearms (as defined by Title 18, Chapter 44, and Title 26, Chapter 53 of the United States Code) for transportation only (a) between licensed importers, licensed manufacturers, licensed dealers, and licensed collectors (as defined in Title 18, Chapter 44 of the United States Code), and government agencies and (b) where not otherwise prohibited by federal, state or local law (i) from an individual to a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector; and (ii) from a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector to an individual. The shipper must comply with and must ensure that each shipment complies with all federal, state and local laws applicable to the shipper, recipient, and package.
Service Guide is your resource for FedEx service information and shipping basics.

                Firearms

FedEx Express will transport and deliver firearms as defined by the United States Gun Control Act of 1968, between areas served in the U.S., but only between:
Licensed importers; licensed manufacturers; licensed dealers; licensed collectors; law enforcement agencies of the U.S. or any department or agency thereof; and law enforcement agencies of any state or any department, agency or political subdivisions thereof; or
Where not prohibited by local, state and federal law, from individuals to licensed importers, licensed manufacturers or licensed dealers (and return of same).

Thanks, but your links only show what I have already stated about UPS and FedEx...they WILL NOT ship to/from a private individual. Now, does anyone one have ANY info about using the USPS? Thank you.

Yes, they will. Contact UPS or FedEx Corp. if you have an issue with a facility (which happens). If you notice the BATF link, it says that it is legal. If you notice the highlighted UPS and FedEx links, you will see it says that if it is legal. It is legal. You are missing that aspect.

Neither UPS nor FedEx rules allow a private party to ship a firearm to another private party or to themselves. That's what Devilok13 is trying to do. The USPS is his only option, but he can't use them for the handguns.

I'm pretty sure he was assuming you might be visiting family there some time in the future and you could pick up the handguns at that time. He wasn't suggesting you make a special trip to pick up the handguns.

It's legal, true, but their tariffs - their announced business policies - say that an FFL must be involved on one or the other end of the shipment. See the wiki -- http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Sh...hin_California

Interesting. While it is legal, they won't allow it.
