    CLFD Question

Hello, just received my FFL 01 License today (took 9 months!), and am working on the application for the centralized list of firearms dealers. It asks for a "local firearms license number". No amount of searching brings up any relevant agency to obtain this license. I am located in San Benito County and I do not think there is a "local" agency that regulates firearms dealers. When in the course of filing my FFL app, I sent the chief law enforcement officer of my county (Sheriff based in Hollister), a copy of my app noting my intent to become an FFL. I received a call from their department saying they have received my letter and did not know what to do with it. Can I just put N/A on the CLFD ? Anyone with input that does FFL business in San Benito County would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You need a firearms retail license, a business license that says "Valid for the Retail Sales of Firearms", or a letter from the licensing authority that says that no license is required. That assumes you want to do retail sales. If you are not conducting retail sales, you apply for the Exempt list.

There should be a County or City agency which deals with it:

My city business license says "valid for retail sales of firearms. My town is so small we do not even have a police dept., and I can find no info on county website. I called the county offices but all I get is the runaround because no one seems to know. I know there are a few tabletop dealers in the area and was hoping I would get lucky with a response from someone who has already solved this problem.

After reading and re-reading Penal Code section 26705, I am just going to submit my business license number as a "LFL" number and my City as the " local Firearms Dealer Licensing Authority". My head hurts.

My "Local Firearms License" is my city business license number.

              Does that help?

Also, it is ok that the Sheriff does not know what to do with your letter. You met the BATF&E requirement and that is all that matters.

I looked and looked and called and called, and finally someone at the sheriff's office finally knew what I was talking about. It seems they hadn't issued one in our county in quite some time.

You will need to give them info regarding your business license. Ours is stamped "valid retail firearm sales" They will also need your sellers permit number and COE.

Did you notify your licensing agency you will be selling firearms? Our ATF inspector made it a point to be sure our license was stamped for firearm sales. One of our other stores was required to get a conditional use permit from the city to sell firearms. Just be sure all is in order.
