PPT/ Unregistered Handgun Question

My friend was asking me about a situation he is in and I figured I would ask the all knowing and powerful CALGUNS forum for advice. He is about to become a first time firearm owner and I didnt want to give him any advice without asking for some other opinions first. His friend is (for the price) basically giving him a classic S&W revolver (I believe a Model 60). The revolver came from Nevada, made its way to its current owner and is now coming to my friend. There is no way to affiliate this gun with the current owner or my friend for now. Now that he is becoming the new owner, what would the reprocussions be if he was to defend himself with a handgun that legally has no relation to him? Is he suppose to go and register this new handgun with the state? What if they want to know about the previous owner but he has no relation to it on paper either? Thanks guys, any and all advice would be great. I personally bought all of my guns from my LGS so I have no experience with private party transfers or anything like that.

The current owner and your friend have to go to a California licensed dealer to complete the transfer. The handgun will get registered to your friend during this process. It doesn't matter at all that the handgun isn't currently registered to the seller.

If the seller is not a California resident then the Safe Handgun Roster comes into play and might complicate matters.

Sorry to butt in - does this mean if my out of state peeps visit and sell me their piece (minus hi caps mags n such), then as long as it's on the roster...it's fair game?

Yes.

Sometimes your local FFL won't like an out of state person just bring it in, or that's how I remember a few anecdotes. Call ahead to confirm your LGS is good with a walk-in interstate transfer.

Don't ask the peeps to buy something special and then come here to sell it to you, and don't send them money to do such a thing. That would be Badness.
