registering deceased fathers handgun

I had a customer ask me today how to register their deceased fathers handgun. Here is the scenario:

Father passed away an undisclosed time ago. The handgun was found later and no one knew he had it. The son now wants to legally register it.

How do they go about doing this? Ive read lots about it on here but being the new FFL I am I would rather ask the more experienced and get it right.
