Firearms sales same as rifle sale?

I was just wondering if the same system is used by the FFL or the DOJ when you purchase a handgun and a raifle. Now I know you can only purchase 1 hand gun every 30 days and you have to take a test for your hand gun permit but do they take one step further into handgun background checks than rifles or is it the same as a rifle sale?

Also does the DOJ keep your sals record on file to see what you've purchased in the past when it comes to hand guns? The reason I ask is because I was at Turners and some guy received a letter from the city explaining to him that straw purchases were illegal, then he said that he called the number on the letter and he found out that they were keeping a database of all handgun purchases that he made. Then he started to say that's its illegal for them to do that, that they have to disregard the sale after 45 days.

From what I have read, a "straw purchase" is where one person purchases the firearm for another person. As far as paperwork goes, dont know tha answer for that. Dont know about selling but this is about buying. At least this is my understanding and I may be wrong on this. Please correct me if I am wrong and I will learn something too.

All I want to know is if its the safe process by the DOJ for handguns and rifles or do they go one step further for handguns. I also want to understand what information the city was holding in to that this guy was upset about.

        Two different issues here.

        1) The FFL uses the same computer application to send DROS info to Sacramento for all guns sold. As it happens, until 2014 the information on handguns is more detailed; in 2014, the same info is collected for long guns a for handguns. A few other long gun info-reporting changes happen at the same time.

        2) The City of Los Angeles has begun sending letters to people who live in LA when they buy handguns. See this thread - http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=693490 - in the 2A forum.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!
