    Convoluted intra-family-ish transfer question

    Ok....here goes!

I was given a 870 remington shotgun from my ex-stepfather about 10 years ago, when he lived in this state. He currently lives in another state (Washington), and I don't have any contact with him as I am divorced from his daughter.

Am I a "legal owner" of the weapon or is my ex-father-in-law still the legal owner?

Am I able to sell the shotgun independent of whether or not I am the legal owner?

    Thanks in advance!

Yes, as long as the transfer is done through a FFL dealer.

You are currently the legal owner. You and your ex-father-in-law violated the law by doing a transfer from him to you without going through an FFL, but the statute of limitations has long expired on that crime. It's similar to if you ran a red light ten years ago in your car and didn't get caught. You could still sell the car today.
