DOJ Letter

hi all,

not sure if anyone has run into this issue.. I want to purchase a firearm (rifle) directly from the manufacturer in Texas.. Found a local FFL that will handle the transfer.. no issues so far..

Called up the manufacturer to see exactly what info my local FFL has to provide them.. the manufacturer says they need a copy of the FFL license (no problem) and then they asked for a DOJ Letter.. So, I called my FFL and they said no problem with the FFL license, but a DOJ Letter? Never heard of it.. FFL has a DOJ #..

Has anyone every come across a request for a DOJ Letter? I've done several out of state transaction, and never heard of a DOJ Letter for a transfer.. Any help would be greatly appreciated.. and, much thanks in advanced..

Possible that the rifle you are trying to purchase is not available to civilians in CA. If so, they are looking for a DOJ letter of exemption.

Importing any firearm into CA requires the FFL to file with the California DOJ before doing so.

but, wouldn't the DOJ number suffice? it seems strange.. Like I said, I've bought guns from Texas before and never did they ask for a DOJ Letter, just the FFL license.. Thanks for the input..

after doing some research, I believe that is what the manufacturer is asking for.. Thanks for the info..

I just did a purchase with grabagun.com in Texas. I did not hav to be the middle guy between grabagun and my ffl. I informed my ffl about the purchase. My ffl then talked directly with grabagun..they sort out whatever they need to in order to comply. Gun came, drosed, 10 days later..i was a happy guy.

Btw, just drosed another firearm from Gander Mountain, same process, GM talked to my ffl. I did not involve in that process.

I've bought guns from grabagun.com also.. but, I think this is different because it's coming directly from the manufacturer, not another FFL..

Actually, I suspect that they are actually asking for the a CA DOJ letter which has all the updates on when the licenses expire and all that. I have had a couple of places who wanted that (don't recall who since they don't need it and the CFD number is enough).

The shipper would generate the CFLC letter, so the FFL in CA would not have that.
