Question from FFL while picking up firearm

Another thread reminded me of this but when I picked up a 22 caliber handgun a while back the dealer asked me if I also specifically had 22 LR Ammo in my car when I was taking possession of my new piece. I didn't at the time and replied "No." and he seemed satisfied with that answer.

I'm curious, why was I asked this question? I've bought numerous handguns / rifles from other dealers and never been asked such a thing.

Dealer: "Do you have any 22 LR ammo?"

    Customer: "No"

Dealer: "Well here, let me sell you a case or two."

Anything else and they are doing it wrong.

Yeah, I would have expected him to try and sell me some, I just found it odd that the question stopped there.

I suspect he is under the false impression that it is illegal to have the firearm and the ammo in the vehicle at the same time. Or he had a customer who bought a firearm and then did a driveby shooting right away.
