    SSE. Who did it first?

Just wondering when the concept of SSE was born in California and what dealer did it first. Anybody know?

I think PRK was probably one of the first.

The first SSE's were guns like Draco's if I remember right. "Normal" guns like Glock Gen 4's came later.

Definately pre-Draco but, yea, the first SSEs were ARs and AKs, MAC type handguns quickly followed. I do remember this old member named "Impactco" who did one of the earliest SSEs in the area when he transfered his AK pistol through FCA. You might want to ask Impactco who he had do the SSE conversion before it was shipped to FCA.

I think I know that "Impactco" guy

That transaction was through a middleman FFL in Michigan. He used to be vendor here but burned a bunch of people on ammo and parts and was run out of town on a rail. I cannot remember his name...

I was really wondering who did it first with 1911, Glock, etc.

Nope. I was probably one of the first that did it high volume and widely advertised but I definitely didn't create the idea,

Yep, that was him. He shipped the AK pistol in a box with no packing materials. The muzzle was poking through the side of the box. He sent it USPS standard mail to the wrong address where it sat for 5 hours on a doorstep until FCA realized that it went to his home address. He had put the mags in the box and the gun was scratched to hell. Fun.....

The idea was around about 1/2 or 3/4 year after the OLL thing, which would put it into fall 2005 (or was it 2006? I forget). There were at least four avenues being discussed back then: Single-shot conversion (most useful for pistols), single-action conversion (for double-action revolvers), mix-and-match (works where different pistol models differ only in their slides, and use compatible frames), and bare receivers (if they are legally not handguns yet).

The examples that were being discussed back then included the H&K USP Sport (using mix-and-match with the frame of a regular USP), the Korth revolver (after temporarily converting it to cowboy-action). Someone actually imported an S&W (model 14, 27, or masterpiece, I forget) under the single-action exception this way.

For single-shot conversion, the first candidates were indeed AR and AK pistols, because on them the required barrel length was easiest to achieve.

These first attempts were done by individuals, with help from quiet FFLs out of state. You can read old discussions to find out, but you won't find names, only oblique hints. Adam (Freakshow LLC) came much later. And we all know how that one ended up: blowing up big time.

The early days of OLL, group buys, SSE and such remind me of teenage sex: everyone talks about it, few actually do it, and those do it badly.

I was gonna say Wes over @ 10%, but he beat to it by rejecting any such conspiracy. He did help me with a few OLL's when only a few throughout the state would touch them. A true pioneer in the movement.
