I would be careful about answering however you want. It is illegal to lie on the form. So if you put down an ethnicity that you later do not claim, you would be committing perjury. So if you are going to check whatever box you want, be very careful not to go on record as stating you did it just to screw with the government or that you weren't being truthful on the form.

However, it is correct that that data is pointless to a gun dealer. All I care is you have at least one check in each box 10.a and 10.b. Again, whatever you claim there is your business unless you make it my business by saying something stupid like "I am going to lie on this form" and then I can't sign it myself as I would be lying too.

Funny I just did the background check last week and I checked "Asian" like I always do. The guy comes back and says " not to offend you in anyway, but they want to know what kind of Asian?" Hahaha, dang they are getting specific. No biggie I told him and didn't think much about it. Some people are way too sensitive.

Unlike the Federal 4473 single "ASIAN" checkbox, CA has many other choices.

I love telling the story about when I was a rookie FFL and first discovered CA cares what kind of Asian you are. I was running DROS like a mad man from the San Jose Gun Show on all of the first large scale OLLs to come into the state. I didn't realize that the simple "Asian" on the 4473 was not so simple in DROS. So I was making all of these oriental Asians "Asian" in DROS and moving on. Well one day I noticed there were Cambodians on the list. I thought to myself that was odd. Wouldn't they just be Asian? Then I saw Koreans, Japanese, Laotian, and a whole host of Asians. So I went back to the top and looked at what I had been putting all this time for Mr. Chang, Mr. Nguyen, and Mr. Sohn? Asian Indian!

I was young so I was freaked out. I thought for sure all of those DROSes were going to get denied and people weren't going to get their lowers before the two weeks were up. Come to find out, the two weeks never came and no one gives a damn at the CA DOJ what race I put you as. And I learned that DROS cares what Asian you are, but not what anything else you are. Personally I find this racist. Why not list the different Latinos, the different Caucasians, and the different Africans? Why are Asians being singled out?

What I always say is I don't care what you put on your form. It should only say American and I will sell you a gun. Hell even if you aren't American, I will still sell you a gun, it just takes a little extra paperwork. There are a lot of xenophobes who hear me say this and get their panties in a twist, but I don't care. Every law abiding human being that steps through that gun shop's door is the same color to me.

DOJ doesn't care much what is entered under personal information. I have had several occasions where I swiped a DL and forgot to update the buyers address. When calling DOJ to ask for a copy of the correction form to fax in, they simply told me, "don't worry about it. Just change it on the printed form. All we care about is the driver license number." Which makes sense, since that's their primary reference point for doing the background check.

I also asked them about changing a long gun DROS from one to two guns on the day of purchase. Same response. "just change it on the form".
