I have a friend who is moving out of country and wants to have me store some long guns and pistols for him. His son (over 21) is moving with him and MAY move back in one year, if he does then the guns go to him, if he doesn't then I am supposed to purchase or sell for him. Is there any legal way to do this or is this the wrong thing to do? Thanks for any advise.

It would be best to just transfer the firearms to you and then you can transfer them back, if needed.
Loans over 30 days are supposed to have a DROS. The firearms could be locked in a safe which you don't have access to, but then the transfer would be more difficult without the owner present.Kemasa.
