Importing a hand gun into CA from Mexico

    Hey guys~

A customer wants to import a Walther TP from Mexico. It's coming from a brother to a sister. Has anyone tried this? what was your experience? recommendations?

Hoping to hear mainly from other FFLs but any info is appreciated.

Good luck and very expensive. If the firearm was worth lots of money then it is worth it but not just any old gun. I tried bringing a Winchester my grandfather gave me and have customs permit to export but the Mexican exporter and US exporter want to much money. So the rifle stays where it belongs for now!!

A Walther TP would not be eligible for importation because it does not the sporting purposes requirements of the 1968 Gun Control Act.

I think the only way to handle this is to call the ATF. I would not rely on short Internet answers to even attempt such a thing. I mainly would just tell my customer I have no idea since I am not an importer and not even worry about it. $50 transfer fee is not worth it.

Well, I guess our $150 fee plus DROS would be a bit to low of price..... Good thing I haven't quoted the customer yet.

When I talked to the ATF and CA DOJ it didn't sound like much of an issue.

We would have to apply for the import permit, wait 4-8 weeks for it to come back, send that with a letter stating that the F/A is to be hand transported by the owner back to the US for transfer to them for personal use. The owner clears the F/A through customs with all the above paperwork, brings the F/A to our shop, we log it in, 4473, then do an exempt transfer in DROS. The 10 day wait, etc, applies.

Hmmmm? The ATF or DOJ never mentioned anything about an "export permit".

Like I said I have all the paperwork from customs to export it back to the good USof A. The problem is finding someone in Mexico to do it!!

I'm kinda glad my dad did not ask permission when he brought my Great Uncles '94 back with him before he passed. I know that he declared it in his luggage and brought it on the plane back with him. But as far as offical paperwork, I doubt he filled it out. All I know is that it is here now and here is where it will stay. Now if I can only find a rear stock for it, it will be all set for the shadow box that I have planned for it.
