    FFL app questions?????

i noticed a lot of people are applying for a class 1 and 3 ffl, why not just do a class 7? how often do people get denied? do they cash the check regardless if you approved or denied? or only if your approved?

They'll cash your check , check your backround , send paperwork back to CA DOJ they'll go over it and if things are cool you'll get a call for an appt. to go over lots of info . As far as what license to get you need to decide , you'll need to decide what type of business you want to get into . If you want to do more than just buy/sell firearms a class1 with a combo of say a 7 will give you options to manufacture and more , lots of good readiing here check them out and make an informed decision . Please understand there are many other hoops to jump through and probably none more important than local zoning. If the city you live in has issues with gun sales , home business or storefront your FFL could be useless. In fact your inspector will call the city and know there restrictions before they even sit with you . Do some homework and searchs , some citys are great to work with and others not so much but dont give up , check with your city hall/zoning dept . before you even waste the time to fill out the app. Remember if your denied you get your money back for the FFL but why bother unless you know your local govt is behind you .

And remember, it's Type 01, Type 03, Type 07 FFL. The word "class" is used to differentiate which SOT an FFL has paid, not which type of FFL they are.

For instance, a Type 01 FFL with a Class 3 SOT can deal in NFA firearms. A Type 03 FFL is just a collector or curios & relics.

your right. i meant type 07 ffl. i was under the impression that their might not be a interview? do i still need to talk to the zoning dept if i already got the business lic?

          Reasons I can think of:
          - Depending on how they're worded, local zoning ordinances may permit Type 01 activity (sales) but not Type 07 activity (light manufacturing).
          - Manufacturers can have higher overhead - we have fewer insurance companies who will work with us, machines aren't cheap, we had to install some extra 220V lines, etc.
          - ITAR fees $2,250.00 per year (though scuttlebutt is that's going away).

Otherwise 07's go through the same process 01's do.

Does your business license say " Valid for sales of firearms " somewhere on it ? If not you will have to talk to them again. My city hall wont even issue license until you have the , FFL , COE ,sellers permit , and are on the dealer centeralized list . What direction do you plan to take with your FFL ? As efillc said same process , you will have an interveiw.
