    Handgun ID Requirements Question

I have a question for the FFL experts. My CDL expires in a couple of weeks. I have already renewed on-line, but it could be up to 6 weeks before I receive my new CDL. Can I start a DROS on a new handgun if my CDL expires during the 10 day wait? Would this put me in DROS limbo? Am I unable to purchase another handgun until I receive my new CDL?

I have a valid passport as a second form of ID (which is what I will have to use to fly for work) but I'm not sure if it works for a handgun purchase.

    Thanks in advance.

I believe as long as you have started DROS with a valid CDL you will be fine. However you will not be able to start a second one until your new CDL is received. Timing should be about right with your second DROS and receiving your CDL when you factor in the one handgun in 30 days rule.

Incorrect. You must have a valid CA ID/DL when also picking up your firearm. Now, some stores might think your photocopy they took at DROS start is sufficient, but it is not.

No ID on pick up, no pick up.

        No firearm shall be delivered:

        .
        (c) Unless the purchaser, transferee, or person being loaned the
firearm presents clear evidence of the person's identity and age to

As used in this part, "clear evidence of the person's
identity and age" means either of the following:
        (a) A valid California driver's license.
        (b) A valid California identification card issued by the
        Department of Motor Vehicles.
        'Expired' is not 'valid'.

That's what I was afraid of. Thanks for the quick replies.

Its amazing that a valid U.S. Passport is not good enough for ID in this state .

Just remember that a CA ID/DL is not valid for proof of residency, so it all makes "sense".

For purchasing a firearm a US passport won't work anywhere. No address.

That is not quite correct since you can use multiple documents for the 4473 to get all the information you need. In the case of a passport, it does not have the address, but it does have other information, so an additional government document with the address would work. See the instructions for the 4473, specifically 20 a & b.

For CA, there are specific requirements, such as a CD ID/DL or military ID, so it does not matter in CA.
