need legal info on hand gun

Some one I know, was given a pistol to fix that was in broken condition, by a neighbor. The pistol was placed in a work bench drawer, and forgot about (aprox 4-5 years) until said bench was cleaned out. At that time the pistol was found. The pistol was then taken to a gun smith and was repaired. The (registered?) owner has since moved, a couple years ago and have no idea how to get a hold of him.

What I need to know is how to go about steps to A: get it back to him, B: if original owner can not found then legally registered to the person who had it fixed.

Could use some help for the legal stuff thanks!!!

EDIT : Its not me who has it. It is an older neighbor that has it, and asked me. I did't know so I posted this for correct info on how to procide. After reading the answers here, he is going to take it to the police station. They will get it to him.

You need to expend more effort to find the owner.

You know his full name? His former address?

With those two pieces of information I'm pretty sure he could be found. I've found people using: google search, Facebook and the huge database of ancestry.com.

As the previous person said, put more effort into finding him. If you ultimately can't find them you can download a Vol. Reg. form from the DOJ website and submit that with $19 to put the handgun into your name. If the guy remembers the handgun and comes looking for it, you'll have to PPT it back to him

they will get it to him???? i seriously doubt it. they will, at best, notify him to come pick it up within a certain time period. after which it'll be destroyed.

He should be very careful what he tells the police. This is a loan that exceeded 30 days; and is defined as an illegal transfer. Many people talk their way into jail by telling the truth.

statue of limitations is 3 years the OP said its been 4-5 years so nothing to prosecute ....

Well, that's good. Hate to see a person persecuted[sic] for trying to do the right thing. I'm not sure turning it in is the right thing; but, if that's the route the person chooses, he's free to do so.

Without going into why -- I trace people all the time with a fairly good record of success. I think more effort should go to getting it back to the original owner. But, that's just my 2 cents.

We all know the police will put it in the unclaimed property lock-up and do nothing. It will be destroyed.

So after disusing the matter more with him, he is holding off on dropping it to the local PD. He would not like to eat the $200 he paid to get it repaired. So currently standing by for further information / instruction on how to proceed. Any and all information is greatly appreciated.

ok, the guy was found. new big problem, he was found gulty of felony dui hit and run. now what????????????????
