private citizen shipping to FFL

Hello neighbors,

I would like to buy a rifle from a member here on this site. He has offered to ship the rifle to the FFL that I use a lot. (I live in Sacramento) He is not an FFL and my FFL will only accept shipments from another dealer.

I have dealt with this situation for a long time. I recently sold off a large part of my collection and wound up shipping rifles to multiple states. Some accepted direct from me while others insisted they be shipped through an FFL.

But as far as California goes what is the straight dope? Can a private citizen ship a gun for transfer to an FFL in California?

In general an individual can ship to an FFL

Now FFL's can charge a wide price range for their service as this is not a PPT.

If the gun is questionable.... Say a glock shipped with standard mags- its a pain and more

If the Glock is shipped without mags, then a mag is needed for the safety demonstration...

If its say an M4- what is the barrel length? 14 1/2 and the device to make it 16" needs to be pin and welded per rules.. how do they check...
if its an M4 - is it a legal configuration?
was it previously registered as a RAW and cant be transferred in the state?

So the answer is yes- you can ship a gun

also - because we have a plethora of laws.... does an FFL want to receive something that is an BATFE Sting and they receive and transfer something that is not legal....

they are an FFL, not a manufacturer nor gunsmith in many cases....


Chains like say Big 5 or Turners, everything goes through a centralized facility and then shipped to the store...
