Customer wants to PPT to himself

A guy has had an old S&W revolver in his home for decades. He wants to "register" it and I explained the situation about so-called registration, etc.

He says he wants to officially somehow create a paper trail to put the revolver in his name. I've never had this type of situation before. Can he PPT it to himself? (Sounds impractical, probably not doable) or should I have him give it to me to put in the books, then DROS it back to him as if it was a dealer sale? It is rostered. He's a friend, so if it helps to PPT it to me and for me to PPT it back to him, he is OK with that and willing to pay two DROS fees.

The original owner who gave it to him is deceased, so I can't simply PPT it from the owner to him. Any help appreciated. THANK YOU.

VolReg and he's done. Wait a few weeks and have him request a list of firearms registered to him to confirm.

Most civilization is based on cowardice. It's so easy to civilize by teaching cowardice. You water down the standards which would lead to bravery. You restrain the will. You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.

There is no legal requirement for the gun to be registered if he legally owned it before the registration laws went into effect (as evidenced by the "owned for decades".). If he wants it registered, he can do a Voluntary Registration as the others have said. He won't run into any issues from this since he's already the legal owner. He also gets to retain custody of the gun while filling out the paperwork (Unlike if he were to sell the gun then buy it back for the Transfer, where there'd be a 10-day wait). The volreg fee is also less expensive than a PPT.

In every way that matters, a VolReg is the solution to this guy's problem.

I have a friend with a similar situation, who might want to sell or trade one he has had for many decades not registered. so he would just go to local ffl and ppt it, is that correct? Thank you for your time in advance.

Yep, full handgun registration didn't exist until 10yrs or so ago. There are alot of unregistered handguns in CA. Your friend shouldn't have any problems doing a straight PPT when he sells.

He doesn't even need to do the request of registered firearms.

When the VolReg is processed, the DOJ will send him a letter stating that handgun XYZ is now registered to Joe Schmoe.
