loan/storage registration question

how would you register 2 handguns that someone asked you to store for them and also gave you permission to shoot while you stored them. co-worker gave me 2 handguns to store for her while she was moving, i had her write a letter stating i was storing them for her and had permission to shoot them while in my possession. told her also that if she does not pick them up within 30 days i will keep them, she also wrote that in the letter. the 30 days are up next week. i called her to see if she wanted me to ship them to her, (ffl of course, she lives out east now) told me shes not interested in them anymore and i can keep them. how would i register these pistols? i searched couldn't find anything thanks in advance.

Have to do PPT. If you don't, I believe the law requires you to turn them in to the Sheriff's department as lost property at the end of the thirty days.

In order to be legal, the handguns must be transfered through a CA FFL dealer via PPT. She will need to be present for the PPT to be processed. [PC 27545]

Also, since you had control/use over the firearms, you were not storing the firearms. It was a loan. [PC 27880]
Storage would require that she maintained control over the firearms, such as being locked away and only she retained the key/combo for the locked container.

Transfer of ownership and loans lasting longer than 30 days requires the firearms to be transfered through a CA FFL dealer. Failure to comply is a crime (misdemeanors) for both you and the owner.



Penal Code 27545
Where neither party to the transaction holds a dealer's license issued pursuant to Sections 26700 to 26915, inclusive, the parties to the transaction shall complete the sale, loan, or transfer of that firearm through a licensed firearms dealer pursuant to Chapter 5 (commencing with Section 28050).

Penal Code 27880
Section 27545 does not apply to the loan of a firearm between persons who are personally known to each other, if all of the following requirements are satisfied:
(a) The loan is infrequent, as defined in Section 16730.
(b) The loan is for any lawful purpose.
(c) The loan does not exceed 30 days in duration.
(d) If the firearm is a handgun, the individual being loaned the handgun shall have a valid handgun safety certificate.
