Intrafamilial transfers of long guns don't require any paperwork.

Public Where do I find laws regarding the possession of firearms? I'm not sure whether I have a California record that would prevent me from owning/possessing a firearm. Is there a way to find out before I attempt to purchase one? What is the process for purchasing a firearm in California? How can I obtain a Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) license? Can I give a firearm to my adult child? Can he/she give it back to me later? Can I give a firearm to my spouse or registered domestic partner? Can he/she give it back to me later?

    5. Can I give a firearm to my adult child? Can he/she give it back to me later?
Yes, as long as the adult child receiving the firearm is not in a prohibited category, pdf and the firearm is a legal firearm to possess, the transfer of a firearm between a parent and child or a grandparent and grandchild is exempt from the dealer transfer requirement. However, if the firearm is a handgun, you must submit a Report of Operation of Law or Intra-Familial Handgun Transaction, pdf and $19 fee to the DOJ within 30 days. Assault weapons may not be transferred in this fashion. See Penal Code section 12285, subdivision (b).

In other words, just have your dad hand you the shotgun. Done. No requirement to do anything else and long guns are not registered in this state...yet.

Why would you want it "in your name"? Are you aware that if you went to a gun store and bought a brand new 870 today, the state would not have any record that you own it. It would not be "in your name" or in anyone else's either.

Because he doesn't understand that long guns are not registered and that when you buy one, the state is just making sure you are not prohibited from purchasing or possessing one. That is why we are here to educate him. I explain this about three times a day in the gun shop.
