    FFL Fee question for Newbie

This is my first gun purchase and I have questions about fees.

    1. If I buy from a private party will my FFL collect CA sales tax from me?

    2. Is $30.00 a reasonable charge for an uncomplicated FFL transfer fee?

    3. What are the other government fees?

    4. If I buy direct from an FFL dealer in person will they charge me a transfer fee on top of the net sales price? What other government fees?

P.S. I want to buy an AK or SKS.

Thanks in advance for your help.

As long as the FFL does not get involved with finding the buyer or seller nor involved in the price, then sales tax is not to be collected for a PPT.

I think that $30 is reasonable, but different people have different views.

The DROS is $25 for the first firearm (if you are exempt from the 1 in 30 for handguns, the second DROS is $21). You need a HSC card, unless you are exempt, for handguns, which is $25 and is good for 5 years. There are no other fees from the government.

It depends on the FFL. Some charge a transfer fee, others include it with the firearm price. The DROS fee has to be paid, which can either be included in the price of the firearm, or listed separately.

Buying from a private party does not necessarily mean a PPT.
