I have a 1953 SKS for sale on Calguns. I have gotten a lot of inquires about cash and carry. I don't know how that works but the thought of handing over my gun to a stranger with no paperwork scares the lights out of me. I would feel more comfortable going through a FFL. Is the the DROS fee they don't want to pay?? Anybody with some experience on this can shed some light on this.

C&R or FFL??

California law requires most firearms transactions to be processed through a California licensed dealer. C&R long guns that are over 50 years old are exempt from this requirement. So it is perfectly legal for you to sell your Russian SKS to another 18+ year old California resident without going through a dealer. You can sell it to them without any paperwork.
Of course you can insist that the transfer go through a dealer. But that will add $35 in PPT fees and a 10 day wait to the deal. So you will probably have to adjust your price to reflect the added fees and waiting period hassle. You will also lose some potential customers just based on principle. Paperless, dealerless transfers of 50+ year old C&R long guns is one of the only free State type of gun transactions we are allowed here in California. Requiring the transfer to go through a dealer PPT process might be viewed by potential buyers as akin to requiring attendees to your 4th of July B-B-Q and fireworks display to sign a pledge of loyalty to the Queen of England before they can attend. Alienating potential buyers in this way will also effect your sale price.__________________

Just get a copy of the buyer's drivers license and have them sign this:
I certify that I am a California resident,
over the age of 18 and not restricted from
owing a firearm.

I would also include information on the receipt about the firearm.Kemasa.
