QUESTION ABOUT FFL DEALER HERE IN CA

i am buying a handgun out of state from a ffl dealer in iowa. now i was inquiring about a ffl dealer here in california to process it for me. they told me that its $60 to process the handgun + $25 dross fee. i understand that those are normal fees but are they allowed to collect tax from me? i was told that they have to tax me for whatever the amount of handgun i bought it for. from what i understand, if its out of state, they don't collect and all they are doing is receiving it for me and process the dros as an FFL. is this even right collecting tax?

The bottom line is that the FFL is required to pay the sales tax to CA unless the firearm is a private sale, an occasional sale and not coming from a business, which should be documented. This means that the FFL does not have to collect the sales tax from you, but they are responsible for it, meaning the FFL has to pay the money, so typically the FFL gets it from you. There are some FFLs who either are not aware of the requirement or don't care and may not collect it, but there have been stories of audits by the BOE and high fines, interest and penalties.
