I'm not quite sure what the situation has to do with your prospective employment there. Embezzlement usually starts with confronting the accused and giving him a chance to correct the issue. If that doesn't happen then charges are filed.

You didn't ask, but I think you're over analyzing the situation.

Yeah, you are over thinking it. If the customer has a receipt showing money was paid for guns, then the dealer owes whether they have a thieving employee or not. There won't be any lawsuits.

If it happened to me, I would get the customers their firearms or refund their money, I would give my employee a chance to pay back the money in a week, and failure to comply would result in filing a police report and an insurance claim.
www.tenpercentfirearms.com was open from 2005 until 2018. I now own Westside Arms.

Hopefully you still have a job opportunity after airing your friend's dirty laundry !

If you start after the embezzlement occurred, there's not going to be much to investigated from you I'd think.

In this case, the owner of the store is going to be liable for everything (if a lawsuit arose) unless it is a Corp. or LLC. Yeah, the employee was supposedly embezzling, but it was also while performing duties within the scope of his job. The owner would then have to counter-sue said employee.

EDIT: I was going to explain it in more detail, but this site does it just as well with many more examples: http://www.nolo.com/legal-encycloped...cts-29638.html
