So My drivers license has my old address on it currently because I am renting a room. Here is my dilemma... I want to purchase another long gun but I cannot provide a current utility bill to prove my residency at my current home. In addition, the registration on my car is not under my name.

My question is, is it at the discretion of the FFL owner to verify my residency? The only reason I am asking is because the FFL owner knows me personally and knows my situation. I just want to know if he will be breaking any laws if he decided to let "minor detail" go. I'd rather not put him in an awkward situation by even asking to overlook it.

You simply need a government issued document. A utility bill that is not government issued would not work. It is a Federal requirement so if your dealer doesn't see the government issued document, but writes down in 20.b he did, he'd be committing a crime.

I do have a government bill (PGE) but it is not under the same address as my driver license address because I rent a apartment. However, the PGE bill does get delivered to the same address as my driver license. The PGE bill simply states on the front my name and full address of my driver license but on the back it clearly states that it is a bill for another address in California.

Would that work?

PGE is not a government issued document. They are a private corporation.

My local gun shop said they will accept PG&E bill as proof of residency for my handgun.

...but does your driver's license have your current address? If it does, this is acceptable. If it does not, a no go and would need to be a govt issued document.

My apartment's PG&E bill get mailed to my house address and the first page clearly shows my full name with my driver license's current address.

Would it be acceptable if I just print out the online copy and just show them the first page with my full name and current address with the PG&E logo and etc? Because the first page doesn't state that it is a bill for my apartment address. The second page shows that it is a bill for my apartment in another California city.

Try using your current DMV vehicle registration, that's a govt issued document.

No. I always want to see where it says "service address". If your service address does not match the 4473, then it is not proving your address.

However, are there any other way I can show proof of residency besides having a DMV vehicle registration? How about W4 forms?
