Shipping long gun USPS?

I checked with the U. S. Postal Sercice (again) about shipping a long gun and was informed that's okay as long as the carton is not marked on the outside as far as contents. (A declaration of contents and that it is unloaded usually must be signed at shipping).

No sales are involved.

Am I correct or incorrect on my understanding of the following about shipping a long gun:
Neither shipper or receiver are "licensed" but of legal age, not prohibited, etc.

1. A person can ship a long gun to ones self to a residence outside/inside his state to be opened and used by that person for lawful purposes.

2. Intrastate shipping requires no FFL/paper work. (gift, loan, etc)

3. Interstate requires an FFL. (gift, loan, etc)

All firearm transfers in CA have to go through a dealer, with a few exceptions, like an intrafamilial transfer or long guns which are over 50 years old.

BTW, often it is cheaper to ship long guns FedEx ground, especially if you have an online account. It is Federal law that the box can not be marked that it contents a firearm, Brady law, as I recall.

Thanks, so you cannot even loan a long gun to someone without it going through an FFL? I assume that is sending/receiving and sending/receiving back again.

I would have to look up the restrictions regarding loans. If you are both there, it is not an issue, but you asked about shipping the firearm. Gifts have to go through a FFL, unless it is an intrafamilial transfer.

Yes, shipping a long gun from AZ to CA, for a few weeks. Sounds too problamatic and costly. Thanks again.

There are many situations where it is perfectly legal for one California resident in California to ship a firearm to another California resident in California.

- Temporary loans of 30 days or less between two parties "personally known" to each other. (friend, family, etc...)

- C&R long guns over 50 years of age being transfered to somebody over the age of 18.

- As Kemasa already mentioned, transfers between certain exempt family members. (between parent and child, between grandparent and grandchild, between spouses)
