I will be shipping a shotgun to an out of state FFL gun dealer for a relative.
The gun dealer will not give out his FFL number.
Any tips and suggestions?

As for his first 3 and last 5 so you can check him on the EZ check. If he won't, call the ATF and report you think a guy is operating without a license because he won't give his first 3 and last 5 for an EZ check.

Or simply have the guy move on to another dealer.

You can go to ATF's FOIA section and look up the FFL in a CSV file by state.

Or, you can take the gun dealer for face value and just ship to them.

There is no federal requirement for you to have their license number or license.

I can see why the gun dealer won't give out the information. Because non FFL's dont need it.

BUT if you want the info printed on my license bad enough and are willing to search the public domain, I'm not going to stop you from getting it. I mean, lets face it - thats a lot of work to go through to comply with a law that does not exist.

A person needs to make sure that they are sending a firearm to a valid FFL, which means that they do need to give out the first three and last five numbers so that they FFL status can be checked. If the FFL refuses, then there must be a reason. As others have said, it is time to find another FFL.

As others have said, FFLs are not required to give out a copy of their FFL to non-licensees and the BATF says to not give it out, but I have never heard the BATF to say to not give out the information so that the FFL can be checked on the ezcheck web site.
