When you do a ppt what receipts are you getting from the FFL dealer ? Just form 77 or do you need another form to prove that you did the transfer?

Most of my customers don't ask for a receipt for the seller. They just sign their name on the DROS and off they go. I am more than willing to give them a copy of the DROS for handguns and even long guns, even though the long gun DROS proves nothing.

A receipt made from the seller to the buyer and signed by both parties would be sufficient.

I did a ppt 10 days ago and today when I picked up the gun I got a yellow piece of paper which I signed . It reads "Firearms Customer Form 77". Is that all I need from the FFL ? Just want to cover my behind....

That's just essentially a retailer liability waiver written by the profession gun retailers association. It's not a bill of sale or really anything official.

like 10% said- if the seller didn't give you a bill of sale (doesn't have to be formal), just ask the FFL for a copy of the DROS. It has everything you need.

If you give a copy of the DROS to both the buyer and the seller, you need to remove the personal information of the other person.

I thought he was calling a 4473 a Form 77. Thanks for clearing that up.

It is in the CA PC, but it is one of the rare cases where the law matches good practice.

                12076(b)
                (5) If the transaction is a private party transfer conducted
pursuant to Section 12082, a photocopy of the original shall be
provided to the seller or purchaser by the dealer, upon request. The
dealer shall redact all of the purchaser's personal information, as
required pursuant to paragraph (1) of subdivision (b) and paragraph
                (1) of subdivision (c) of Section 12077, from the seller's copy, and
the seller's personal information from the purchaser's copy.
