    ffl fees?

Ok before I get upset by a small charge I would like the opinion and expert knowledge of some professional dealers.

Went in to a gunshop today puchased a shotgun. As I was standing in line to pay I start to read the receipt, on it there is a "handling fee" for my firearm. Now the fee is only $5 but it isn't the point. The point is I purchased a new firearm from this store, why are you charging me a handling fee for this. Now I did ask a "manager" what it was, his explanation is it is to cover the expense of doing the paperwork. I asked again politely why not eliminate this "fee" and just raise the price by $5? Bottom line he is not far enough up the food chain to make a bit of difference, so I paid and left. No I was not upset enough to stop a DROS and go elsewhere.

Now in hindsight I have never looked for an additional fee from anywhere else that I typ. purchase guns from. So is it common and as it is only $5 I overlooked it in the past?

If you bought it from the gunshop, they could charge $500. If it was a PPT, you got overcharged $5.

That is a new one on me. I have never been charged a handling fee at a gun store. That sounds more like like internet BS.

        I wish it was...

and to Paul it is a brand new gun from a shop, not mail ordered there not a ppt, they had the gun on ad, I saw it wanted one went and bought it. Fee was not mentioned while completing paperwork however it is clearly labeled on the receipt though.

        This is kinda irritating actually...

I guess the brass there figured us lemmings are soo used to fee's we wouldn't even question it. well last firearm I purchase there.

        Thanks for the explanation.

You have to ask. Most places include the labor involved in selling a gun from them to you in the price of the gun. That is not required however.

It is silly marketing, since that is what you are going to remember from the experience, and the 5 bucks could have been included in the price, or just ignored.

it isn't internet BS. There is a large SoCal chain that charges $25DROS + $5 dealer fee for instore purchases.

If it is the chain I am thinking about, the next time you go in look around for their DROS pricing sheets that they have posted around the gun counters. It'll have the breakdown of where the $25 DROS fee goes, $19 for this, $1 for that, etc, and then it will show that they have a $5 dealer fee for purchases. It'll also show the breakdown of fees if you do a PPT, $35 total.

It sucks that you didn't know about the $5 fee, and it would be "better" if they included it in the cost of the gun, so you can compare apples to apples when price shopping, but most of us that have dealt with them before know that it will cost us $30 in fees to buy instead of $25.

It is the shop, apparently it is well known and it could be posted throughout. I simply walked in my paperwork ready and said please DROS me a 870 that is on ad. didn't look around just in and out.

Sad is it is my first gun purchase from them, tried a few years ago but didn't like the attitude there so went elsewhere. Then they now become members here with what seems like an honest attempt at fixing things. So over the last few months bought a safe, some ammo, targets, etc.... All good experiences untill this.

It would be much better to include this in the price. It is deceiving showing one price in the add then adding to it when your there to buy. The fact if it is $5 or $.50 or $500 doesn't matter it is ethics. Live and learn too many ffl's out there to deal with someone nickel and diming me.

and in another thread, they are talking about eliminating the fee, or waiving it for repeat customers (not that it would have helped you in this case), but they know that it is an issue for some/many people. But policies don't always change overnigh.

$10 dealer fee on top of $25 PPT state fee is legal. Max $35. If not a PPT, they can charge whatever they want.

He's not talking about transfer fees.
He's talking about Turner's $5 "dealer handling fee" that they tack onto everything except PPT.

Yep It is clear on the receipt that it is a handling fee......

And honestly it is ridiculous of them to charge such a thing, If you want to make $5 or $500 advertise it at the price you want. The only reason that I even went back in there was due to the fact of them bieng here and it appeared that they were trying to be stand up and change thier reputation....... so a few small purchases and all was well then a mediocre size purchase still good, hear no fud no attitude from counter at a few different stores, so I see a 870 for a great price while I'm thinking I want another shotgun....... Now the ad price is $319 at $324 I would've still gone in and purchased and been happy about it.

Now am I? NOPE... Will I go back? lmfao yeah in ten days.

Well whoever runs T&A armory, fowlers, ade's,fieldtime can just thank whomever was the brain behind this idea.......

Any other ffl/shops I am forgetting?
