    Locks and Long Guns

I am getting conflicting information reading the forms and help sheets regarding the real requirements when doing a transfer or sale of a long gun. Am I as a FFL dealer required to make sure the buyer has a CA approved lock for their gun? Is that buyer required to lock the long when transporting it like they are with a handgun?

    Thanks

CA has a lock requirement and the Feds have a lock requirement for handguns (which has not been published, as required).

    The CA requirement:

There is no requirement to lock a long gun when it is being transported like a handgun.

There is no requirement to lock a handgun while transporting it. If you have a cable lock on a handgun somewhere in the cab of your vehicle, you are probably committing a crime. A handgun needs to be in a locked container other than the glove box or utility compartment or in the trunk.

There is CA PC that says all firearms must leave in a container. I know that one might not get followed as often as it should.

I know there is PC that says "securely wrapped" (whatever that is) but was unaware of PC that specifies it must be a "container".

12072(c)(2)...unless unloaded and securely wrapped OR unloaded and in a locked container.

I do not know of any requirement that a firearm has to be in a container when leaving a FFL either. I am aware of the law as quoted above. It would be nice (perhaps) to know exactly what "securely wrapped" means :-).
