You can't legally, at least in the United States. You might be able to do it for awhile, but you had better be ready for a tactical entry team "visiting" you at some point. Let us know how that works out.

More specifically, transferring firearms in CA without both the Federal FFL and the CA license will get you criminal charges -- Federal law 18 USC 922 (a)(1) and California Penal Code 12070.

Now, if what you mean is 'I don't want to have a store, I just want to work out of my home', that's possible, but you do need the licenses first.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

Even if you just do illegal transfers of illegal weapons, you'ld be considered an illegal arms DEALER. So, I am not sure how you could do transfers from your home, office, alley or the trunk of your car without becoming a "dealer" of some sort.

I think that the real question is that the OP wants to just do transfers, not be a stocking dealer. As far as the laws are concerned, you would still be a dealer and need to have most of the licenses (would not need to be a secondhand dealer, but would need everything else). Depending on where you live, you might be able to get all the licenses for a home based business.
