    father to son transfer?

So I'm actually 31years old now and just got back from visiting my father up in idaho, and while i was there he mentioned that he still had my marlin model 60( .22cal) that was mine when i was an early teenager and asked if i would like to take it back to cali with me, i said sure so i brought it home with me..

now my question is im 100% sure its registered in his name considering he bought it for me when i was 13. I'd like to be totally legal and get it transferred over to me(considering im trying to get my FFL03). do i have to goto a local gunshop and have them do something or is there just some paperwork i can mail in and have everything go through?

    thanks

Long guns are not even registered in CA. I doubt that they are or were ever registered in Idaho.

        OK, here's the scoop.

        1) Either it was YOURS or it was your DAD's. If he gave it to you when you were 13 - my dad gave me my first .22 when I was 13 - then it is, and always has been yours. That he stored it for you in ID for the last 18 years does not matter.

        2) We hope it is YOURS, because if it was DAD's you each accidentally committed a Federal Felony - him for giving it to you, when he lives in ID and you live in CA, and he knew that, and you for bringing it back to CA. See the wiki article on interstate transfer.

        3) Assuming it's YOURS, you need do nothing at all. California does not register long guns.

If it was given to you as a teenager, it's your gun. You can always send in this form and register it if it will make you feel better, but I really don't see why you would want to. Long guns are not required to be registered in CA.

As Librarian said, it needs to have always been yours so that a transfer between residents of two different states did not occur. Filling out a form saying that you acquired it would be documenting that it was an illegal transfer (that does not mean that anything would happen, but it could).
