I would have been on the phone immediately afterwards and described the three guys and their vehicle. My small town police would have been all over them and if they were felons with guns, it would have worked out.

Yup good common sense advice.

I often get plates off any vehicles related to the suspicious persons in the shop. Just common sense. If you think something "ain't rite" it probably isn't. You never know if the person is casing for a burglary or worse.

Your #1 defence to prevent armed robbery in a gun shop is Situation awareness. Sounds like these guys had it down to a art form. We are able to see into our parking lot and watch people pull in get out of the car and what they do before they enter the shop.
Our shop layout is one where we can cover all areas without crossfire hazard. Hell even our shop regulars who like to hang out are told hand signals to let them know to either leave or get down, just so they are not in the way.
One gun on the counter at a time per staff person is the rule, and that staff person will be within arms reach of that firearm at all times. We watch to make sure bad guys don't bring ammo in and load a gun they ask to see. If we are over run with a large group, one staff person pulls back...even if this means that someone has to wait to be served. That staff person has one job at that point. Watch...thats it Just watch.
Pray for the best...train for the worst.

Good thing it went down like that. I remember watching a surveillance video of a bunch of thugs rushing a Turners, no one had a chance to think.

As for writing down car info, this is a great idea, and one I have used. Because of this I was able to help put a murder in jail!

It went down like this.....

Open up the shop early on a Sunday ( yeah I was open on Sundays then). The first person to pull into the lot had a very cool Mustang..so it got my attention. Out steps a woman wearing daisy dukes, a tube top, and looking like she has been on a three day bender. Now I think the car is stolen..so I write down the plate. She comes in bouncing off the walls, asks for 44mag ammo, and asked me not to write it up. I said no so she added a wrist rocket to the order *blink* have no idea why. She went out to the car and then sat in it. OK this gets my attention...strange lady in the car and now has ammo. 5 min later she comes back with the empty ammo box and chucks it in the trash. At this point I want to take the sale back, but its too late. Now I take a full description of her, and the car, also take the ammo out of the trash and put it to the side.

4 days later the PD come to the shop asking of maybe anyone remembers this woman. Oh hell yeah...here is the car info, her info, a copy of the recept, and the box of ammo. Took me 3 seconds to pick her in a line up. I thought the PD were going to either cry or start doing the Happy Dance.

5 years later I spend 20 min on the stand and she goes away for life for shooting her boyfriend as he slept.

Still wish I would have not sold that box of ammo, but at the time she was just strange...not strange enough to kick out of the shop.

Lesson learned...if your gut is telling you warning.. go with it.

that is hard to know that you sold that ammo, its like I sold a sportbike to a guy that the following week he was runover in the 605 freeway.
later that same year the family was trying to sue me, what they said it was an unsafe sportbike.
