    Ar15 80% legal issues

I recently started a ar15 80% project thinking that I would be able to finish it without having to do a background check or registering it. Now after talking to a guy who owns a machine shop he is telling me that i need to register it in my name and do a background check if it is going to be a legal pistol. I am a little confused. I thought that if you built it yourself from a 80% lower you would not have to do all of the background checks. Can some please clearify for me. thanks

Does it have a serial number? If not then its just a piece of metal. If you do the cutting then it doesnt need to be registered. If he owns a machine shop and he does the cutting then you would need to have it registered because he is licened.

Okay that makes sense. He was also telling me that all firearms must be registered even if you build them yourself (80% lower with no outside help) so that way DOJ can keep track of them.

Well, he's full of it. First of all, the only things that are registered are handguns (and RAWs, but good luck trying to register that). Long guns are not registered. Secondly, unless you're building NFA firearms (which you can't in CA anyway), if you build firearms for your personal use (as in not for resale), including handguns, you don't need to register them, run them through DROS, etc. The trick is that YOU have to be building them for YOUR personal use.

I am not trying to thread jack, but would like to know if anyone has a link to further information about 80% lower builds that contains all the legal information and requirements pertaining to building an 80% lower
