What is the process when a FFL reports a stolen firearm?

I was a at Gun show this weekend and over heard a FFL making out a report with a deputy on sunday about a long gun missing from his table. My question is what happens next besides the usual.I know the serial number gets enter into the system as stolen but what then? Does the DOJ or ATF do anything special to the dealer or is it treated like any other theft.
Willl they audit the dealer ?

It's like any other theft. Dealers get audited regularly as a rule anyway.

Here's how it works - this is on the federal side, CA might have their own thing that acts in concert but.....

Notify ATF about the loss - you fill out a form that says what went missing, date, time, etc. File report with local PD.

Enter in the report number into your books.

Keep records of all the reports. Thats it.
