How do you verify a Gun is not stolen?

I called the ATF and they said to call my local law enforcement agency. I called the sheriff and they said that they do not run checks for stolen guns only officers can.

There are some web sites where people can list stolen firearms, but the lack of a database of stolen firearms is annoying. The easiest way to determine if the firearm is stolen is to do something such the police run it, then then you will have other problems.

There is no national database, so a firearm stolen in one state will not be easy to check in another state, unless you contact all 50 States.

My buddy, an LEO, told me I should call my local PD and ask them to run a serial to check if I was concerned.

I found a number to call

        304-616-4500

You have to have the gun in your possession. If it is a stolen gun, then the ATF will contact you to dispose of it. If your customer brought you this gun then you are supposed to take the gun away and hold it for the ATF.
That sounds problematic. Like what if it is a really big guy?

This sounds like a stupid solution to the problem. Why not just tell you if the gun is stolen before you take it in as trade. Have them go chase the guy down not us.

If you are an FFL in CA and are dealing in used guns, you are supposed to be reporting them to the state with the FDAS system. Presumably they are checking for stolen hits during the 30 day hold you are supposed to put on inbound used guns.

Never had a problem checking on prospective purchase via my local sheriff.

I am located in Texas. The local sheriff office has declined to run the check.
