I may have to send my Henry Acu-Bolt back to the factory for some work. They are sending me an UPS label. My question is does this need to be done through a FFL? Henry said it I could just drop it at any UPS site, but I thought all firearms had to go through an FFL.

There is no law requiring you to ship through an FFL - merely TO an FFL.

Actually, firearms returned from repair does not need to go through a FFL as long as the serial number does not change.

If you ship it UPS do NOT drop off the firearm at a UPS Store, only drop it off at a real UPS location. The UPS Store is NOT UPS and if they lose the package, you are SOL. I learned that when I returned an item for repair and the clown in the place refused to give me a receipt and the UPS driver who picked it up did not scan it. I had to wait until there was long enough time for it to have arrived, which it did, but in calling about it I learned about this issue.

I'm aware of that - the question posed was how does the NON-FFL get the gun to the FFL to repair it. After that - it's the FFL's duty to get the gun back to the customer.

Hand the labeled outgoing to the UPS counter person, or a driver, it's handled. The hard part is the return, it will be adult signature required. The last two I did, to Kahr and back, went UPS and came back FedEx ground. By the time I got downstairs to answer the door (two minutes?) the guy was fired up and headed around the corner. I called the 800 number, vented a bit to the nice lady, and they got a hold of him and he was back in half an hour...........and waited the two minutes that time.

The last part is not correct since repaired firearms can be sent directly back.

Since it appears that it is a long gun (accu-bolt), it can be shipped USPS as well:

The manufacturer knows how to ship it back. It can go through a FFL, but the FFL might charge and not know how to return it, plus it was said that there was a UPS label being created, so it is all dealt with.

The question was whether it was ok for the person to ship it, which the answer is yes, there is no Federal law requiring that a FFL ship it. There might be state laws in some states, but not in CA.
