it's an otherwise legal handgun which is not semi-automatic. Yes, to my understanding of california firearm laws it's legal.

FWIW, I have some high powered rifle cartridge chambered handgun (Encore) in the collection. The small bore are ok but as bore size grows recoil gets unmanageable. .223rem was ok but .308win was untenable and .444 was enough that I won't do that again. Another downside beyond terrible recoil in some chamberings, is that you lose a large amount of performance in a pistol length barrel from those rifle chamberings.
