    New BATF requirement???

I was talking to a FFL in Hawaii and he said that his BATF agent told him that there is some sort of new BATF regulation that now requires 2nd Day air shipment of firearms, which USPS priority mail does not work. He was informed of this a couple of weeks ago.

I have heard nothing about this and have to wonder if it is true or not. Has anyone else hard any such thing?

I though this was some lame newby question until I looked at the poster. If it isn't in a newsletter, it is FUD as far as I am concerned. And something this big would get us a BATFE Newsletter I would think.

I wonder if that has to do with being in Hawaii.

I looked and could not find anything. I will have to call that person back to get more details or inform him that it seems to be incorrect. I figured I should ask to see if someone else had heard something in case I missed something.

This FFL claims to have received a letter or something. The connection was bad as he was on a cell phone and won't be in his shop until tomorrow.

There is no ATF requirement. I call BS.

Now, via common carrier like UPS or Fedex - they can specify whatever they want, and most large shippers will get an exemption to ship 2nd day instead of overnight.

The comment was made that the ATF had some sort of new requirement of 2 Day Air, which Priority is 2-3 Days, so it does not count. Most likely it is BS, but I want to make sure. Since no one has heard about it other than this one Hawaii FFL, that also indicates that it is false.

I thought guns were banned in Hawaii?

UPS requires handguns to go next day air unless you request and receive an exemption.

I'm glad this came up. I had called Cal-DOJ and ATF in the last month or so to see if this "2nd day air" or "overnight" thing was simply a carrier's requirement or an actual law. Both agencies said that they had no law covering this issue.

I talked to the person that I know at the BATF and he said that there is no requirement at all. I am going to call this guy and get more details. It might be that either he or his BATF inspector/agent is confused with the requirements of UPS and FedEx, which have no relationship to USPS.

It was created by the carrier's to decrease internal theft. Their own employees were stealing guns like crazy so they instituted this requirement. Pretty lame if you ask me.

yup, funny how they directly pass on their internal theft prevention costs to the customer like that.

Good thing the XO-26 is not defined as a pistol. (...at least federally.)

I talked to the FFL in Hawaii. He said that he received a letter from the local office in which it said that handguns had to be shipped Express and that there had to be a tracking number, that Priority with delivery confirmation did not qualify. The Hawaii BATF office is quite small, if you know what I mean by that. It is being looked into further.
