FFL paperwork

I gather that if I want to ship a handgun to a buyer's FFL, I need to have an FFL ship it. What paperwork does the shipping FFL include in the box to document that an FFL did indeed ship it?

Its not required that an FFL ship, check with the receiving FFL if they accept from non FFL's. The Calguns wiki has info on this. As for the sending FFL, they have to get an DOJ Shipment approval letter. They normally include that as well as a copy of their FFL.

"As of July 1, 2008, California Penal Code Section 12072(f)(1) prohibits all Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs), other than Type 03 or 06 FFLs, from shipping firearms to an FFL in California unless, prior to delivery, the FFL intending to deliver, sell or transfer the firearms obtains a verification approval number from the California Department of Justice (CADOJ) Bureau of Firearms. This includes transfers that occur at gun shows.

If one DOES use an FFL to ship, the shipping FFL must receive the DOJ approval. But if it is not an FFL who ships, no approval is required.

All the above answers assume the receiving FFL is inside CA. If the receiving FFL is outside CA, no shipping approval is required. OP did not state whether the receiving FFL is in CA or outside CA.

Generally in this case, only a copy of my FFL goes in the box for shippment.
