    Off list transfer

if a relative (not a parent or son) is visiting from out of state. He brought his SR9 (w/ a 10 rnd mag)with him so we could go shooting. Is there any way he could sell me his SR9 using a PPT through a FFL if we both go to the FFL in person?

If that SR9 is on California's "safe handgun" Roster then you two can do a transfer at a California dealer. It wouldn't technically be a PPT since your relative won't have a California drivers license. That means the dealer can charge whatever he wants for the transfer.

It looks like there are two Ruger SR9 models on the Roster.

      just curious...

      What kind of "SR9"?

      (handgun) Ruger SR-9 or (rifle) H&K SR-9?

Normally when someone says "off-list" I think assault weapon laws and there's different answers depending on if it's a handgun or a rifle.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the HK SR-9 rifle. The OP was probably talking about that since he said "off list" instead of "off roster". If it's the rifle then it would need to have a magazine locking device added or all "evil features" removed before it was brought into California. Then it could be transfered at a California dealer who is comfortable doing such transfers.

It is a Ruger SR-9 handgun.
It is the earlier model. not the 10L

            To be clear...
if it was from my Dad it doesnt matter about the "safe handgun" list?

If that version of the SR9 pistol is not on the Roster then the only way to get it from an out of state resident would be through a Roster exempt transfer. A transfer from your parent, grandparent, child or grandchild would be Roster exempt. Transfers from other out of state relatives are not Roster exempt.

Not all dealers in California know about the Roster exemption for out of state "family" transfers. You'd need to find one who knows how to process such a transfer. There is a thread around here somewhere that has a list of dealers who know about the exemption.
