Does a seller go thru background check?

If a person sells a firearm and goes thru a FFL dealer as required by CA state law to do the transfer does the person selling also go thru a background check or does the firearm itself go thru some type of check to be sure it's not stolen?
Or is it that only the buyer goes thru the background check?
Also what if the firearm is sold to a gun shop does the seller go thru background?

Handguns are checked to see if they are stolen.

Sellers information is used for a check if the buyer is denied. Dealers must return the firearm to the seller immediately unless the seller is also denied. In that case, the firearm is turned over to LE.

It is unknown if the CA DOJ checks the status of the sellers unless the buyer is denied.

Your question is interesting and raises some questions. It sounds like the seller might have a problem and not be able to legally own a firearm, which would be the reason for being concerned if the seller has a background check done. If the seller should not have a firearm, then the firearms should be turned over to a dealer to dispose of them. I don't think that a PPT is the proper way to transfer them since if the buyer is denied, then firearms have to be turned over to the police.

There is a check of some sort done for consignment firearms. I don't buy used firearms (except for myself), so I am not sure of what checks are done, if any, when a FFL purchases a used firearm.

Does the seller have to give a finger print? I don't remember giving a finger print when selling one of my pistols last year. This year I sold an AR lower receiver via PPT and the FFL required I put down my finger print. Each time were through different FFLs

I don't think that there is any law requiring it, but some FFLs do in case the buyer is prohibited and just to "play it safe".

Since the question was about a PPT, not a consignment, there is no 30 day hold just because the FFL is a Second Hand Dealer if the firearm is transferred, as in a PPT.

Can you provide some PC for this?

I've only operated under PC 12077 which states:

                (2) Effective January 1, 2003, the purchaser shall provide his or her right thumbprint on the register in a manner prescribed by the
department. No exception to this requirement shall be permitted
except by regulations adopted by the department.
Consignment sellers obviously need to give a thumbprint due to FDAS, but I don't collect any thumbprint from a seller on a PPT.

TRUE. Again, I've sold handguns via PPT before through other FFLs and they have never requested a fingerprint. It may be just the "store policy" of the latest FFL I went to
