Is the handgun I'm buying going to be an issue if it has been duracoated? It is coming from out of state so it isn't a FTF transfer.

CA approved handguns question

I believe so. You will see where guns are listed as being two-tone, black, OD green, and so on and so forth. The guns are functionally the same, so the only difference is a different color. Those guns require approval.
So in my opinion, guns that are painted, chrome plated and the such are now different for roster purposes.
That doesn't mean you might not find a dealer who will do it and just call it the make and model of what it is.
Ask you receiving FFL.
Now if you get a gun and then send it out for Duracoating, that is totally legit.www.tenpercentfirearms.com was open from 2005 until 2018. I now own Westside Arms.Comment

True but, a lot of guns are also listed as steel or polymer, no color indicated.

I appreciate the quick replies.
It's used. No paperwork. I called sig customer service today and asked them if they could verify it through the serial # and they said no problem. So no big deal but it still fits a description on the approved list. It probably used to be the Blued one with the *** by it
Yea the thing is "two-tone" it doesn't specify what the colors are and every single one that is approved says stainless steel

You will have no problem DROSing it, that is for sure. The problem might lie with the DOJ coming in to do an audit, seeing a refinished handgun, saying that takes it off the list, and then writing you up for selling handguns off the list to non-exempt people.
That is the risk you take.
What color is the Duracoat? If it is the same color and just basically a refinish, no one will probably notice. If it is pink or camo, then they would be able to tell. Assuming the agent even comes in or even cares.www.tenpercentfirearms.com was open from 2005 until 2018. I now own Westside Arms.Comment

The way I read the OP's question, he bought a used firearm from a private individual (gunbroker) who at some point refinished his gun?
The "original" firearm is on the list. What's the problem?Originally posted by orangegloWelcome to failtown, population = you.Comment

The problem is if it doesn't match the finish on the list of handguns approved for sale in California, then it isn't on the list. If it isn't on the list, then an FFL cannot DROS it to a non-exempt person.
If it is still black, then it is still the same gun. If it is camo, pink, or chrome plated, it isn't on the list.
That is how the law reads and that is how the list reads.
Now, would the DOJ know you DROSed a non-rostered handgun unless they came into your shop to see it had been painted or chrome plated? No. However, it is what it is.www.tenpercentfirearms.com was open from 2005 until 2018. I now own Westside Arms.Comment
