A guy at the gun show this weekend told me that once you get your card and purchase a handgun that even though the HSC expires that it's still in the system and I no longer need to have one when purchasing another hand gun. I just figured it was FUD and I would post here and see what I come up with.

FUD...if you want to purchase a new gun, borrow a handgun, or have a handgun transferred to you, then you need a new HSC. You do not need a HSC to own a handgun already registered to you.

Yes, you need to renew... or retake the test. You see, you are deemed automatically unsafe with handguns the instant the HSC expires... unless you have an exemption to it... Go figure.

Along with the waiting period if I already have a gun.

It's $15 to replace a lost one (must be replaced by the original issuing gun shop).

The card is good for 5 years. The replacement is good for the balance of that.
If you bought an HSC last year for $25 and lost it, then needed a replacement this year, then $15 was a good deal for you since it's good for another 4 years.

If you bought an HSC 4 years for $25 and lost it, then needed a replacement this year, then $15 was a complete hose job since it's only good for another year. You could have just spent $10 more and had a new HSC good until 2016.

To the OP, the HSC is not a legal requirement for gun ownership. You only need the HSC if you are purchasing or borrowing a gun. It is not needed for a range rental.
Just because your HSC has expired doesn't mean that you need to renew it.... if you don't plan to buy or borrow a gun for another year, just wait and get a new card then.

Yep...supposed to take the test again every five years...or whenever you get a "new" HSC card.
