    Transfer to Son in Oklahoma

    I would like to transfer a rifle that I purchased last year here in CA to my adult son living in Oklahoma. What are the rules for this transfer?

    Federal law requires that firearms transfers between residents of two different States have to go through an FFL. You will need to ship the rifle to an FFL in Oklahoma who will then transfer the rifle to your son.

      Thank you for the info.

        What you meant to say is that federal law requires firearms transfers between residents of two different states have to have the firearm wind up at an FFL.

        When you say they have to go through an FFL, you imply an FFL is required on both ends when it is only required at the receiving state.

          That is what was said. The sentence "You will need to ship the rifle to an FFL" is implying and meaning that only the receiving has to be done by a FFL, not that the shipper has to be a FFL, as you claim was implied.

          What was said was fine and should have been perfectly clear to most people.

            Seriously, WTF? How could you interpret "through an FFL" to mean through two FFLs? And how could you interpret "You will need to ship the rifle to an FFL" to mean "you will need to have an FFL ship the rifle to an FFL"? Your post is one of the most bizarre I have ever seen on Calguns, and that's saying a lot.

              I get it guys.

              Here is another question: What if my son that lives in Oklahoma drives out to visit me one day. Can I just simply give him a rifle at that time so that he can drive home with it? Would we need to go through a FFL at that time?

                Two people who are residents of states can not transfer firearms between each other, a FFL has to be used.

                  <noob>

                  Ok now with that out of the way, I am hunting a gift for my groomsmen this coming May, as we are all avid gun guys and prior military I was considering getting them AR lowers with something custom engraved on them... If I am following the above correctly I'll need to purchase the lowers in my name here in California then ship them to FLLs in their individual states (Oregon and Washington) so that they can get them there...

                  1) Am I following along right?
                  2) Anyone know of a good place/price for custom AR lower engraving?

                  Mike

                    For what you want to do, you don't need to transfer the lowers into your name. You just need to find a place who is willing to work with you, perhaps a manufacturer who will do the engraving. If not, you can have a FFL receive the lowers and then ship them to the place to have the engraving done, get them back again (for inspection, if nothing else), then ship them off.
