Question:

Maybe moving out of California to Illinois.

Q: Do my gun have to be shipped though a FFL?

And what about my Ammo..? Does this also have to be shipped or can I take it with me if I decide to drive?

if you drine have the firearms in a locked container if you can put them in the trunk (pistols and long guns) ammo in a separate compartment or also lock in a container. there is a federal law that protects you from other states laws while tavel to or from your state and this is the configuration they must be in. also make sure they are not with in reach of you while driving.

You can ship all of your firearms to yourself at your new house in Wisconsin. You don't need an FFL on either end. You can even ship them to a friend's house in another State (if you didn't have a house yet or something like that) as long as the package was address to you "care of" your friend and as long as you write something on the label like "TO BE OPENED BY (Your Name) ONLY".

Shipping guns to your new house, the label would look like...
